The piece tells the story of the corner of one particular room and the characters that inhabit it over the course of several millennia. The piece is a meditation on time built from the fleeting instants that make up the daily rhythms of our lives, a poetic evocation of the way in which moments of meaning – big and small – reverberate across the ages. Based on Richard McGuire’s ground-breaking graphic novel, HERE is an epic tapestry woven from the threads of everyday life. ![]()

In order to sustain solidarity between lesbians of different generations, we suggest that narratives about gender should include both intrinsic and extrinsic components. For Baby Boomer lesbians, lesbian identity connoted an alliance with feminism, and for Millennials their sexual identity indicated a political alliance with queer and trans* movements. It appears that participants across generations articulated their sexual identities strategically to express not only a sexual orientation but more importantly political and community alliances. Nevertheless, we found a shift away from understanding gender as an oppressive category to an understanding of gender as a proliferating identity in which one may play with gender in an intentional and creative manner. ![]() ![]() Participants from both generations rejected the gender binary. Likewise, the suppression of jazz in Berlin in the 1930s and early 1940s is not an entirely new choice of subject. Plop your characters in Berlin or Paris in 1940 and have at it. Western Europe in 1940 is hardly untrod territory for fiction authors and readers keep returning to the Second World War and it’s starting to feel like a stale, cheap, easy way out for storytelling. Edugyan is clearly an author to watch, as her previous work, The Second Life of Samuel Tyne, was equally stunning and quickly captured international attention after its release in 2004. A lyrical, complex, layered narrative of friendship, betrayal, and jazz, the book approaches well-worn narrative ground with a fresh perspective. Esi Edugyan’s Half Blood Blues (Serpent’s Tail, 2011) is one of the more outstanding entries on this year’s Booker Prize longlist. ![]() |
